SALT LAKE CITY (Gray News) - Police in Salt Lake City say three people are in custody after a shooting that left a victim with life-threatening injuries during the city’s “No Kings” demonstration.

The Salt Lake City Police Department says the shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday during the downtown march attended by about 10,000 people. Officers heard gunshots and responded to the scene, where they found one person with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening.

Based on information from witnesses, police chased down a man involved in the shooting and took him into custody. He also had a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A short time later, police say two other people involved in the incident were taken into custody.

“The shooting at tonight’s protest in Salt Lake City is a deeply troubling act of violence and has no place in our public square,” wrote Utah Gov. Spencer Cox in a social media post.

Police Chief Brian Redd said at a press conference that it was too early to tell if the shooting was politically motivated or whether those involved knew each other. He said the shooter appeared to be walking alongside the marchers, according to the Associated Press.

Before the shooting, police say the demonstration was peaceful.

The incident remain under investigation. Police are asking anyone with videos and photos of the shooting and the moments immediately after to submit them online.

The “No Kings” march in Salt Lake City was one of nearly a dozen such demonstrations against President Donald Trump that took place Saturday in Utah, KUTV reports. Other demonstrations took place across the country in such cities as Philadelphia, New York, Houston and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Trump himself was in Washington for a military parade marking the Army’s 250th anniversary.
