Woman charged after high-speed chase ends in crash near Blue Ridge Cutoff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City woman has been charged with multiple felonies after leading police on a pursuit and causing a high-speed crash that resulted in life-threatening injuries.

Court documents filed in Jackson County on Thursday said Kenyasha Hansen was charged with aggravated fleeing a stop or detention causing physical injury and second-degree assault.

The Independence Police Department said officers originally attempted to stop Hansen after she was going 53 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone. Hansen originally stopped her Buick but sped away from an officer after they exited their vehicle near Truman Road and Northern Boulevard.

A police pursuit followed. According to court documents, Hansen’s boyfriend -- who she’d called during the pursuit -- ran a stop sign in a gold Lexus and cut off an officer from pursuing Hansen’s Buick. The officer then began pursuing the Lexus.

“As officer pursued the Lexus, the original Buick was involved in a serious injury crash at Blue Ridge Cutoff and 55th St.,” court documents said.

A crash investigation revealed Hansen’s Buick entered the intersection at estimated speeds of 100 miles per hour and failed to stop at a red light. Hansen’s car struck a Ford F-150 and resulted in life-threatening injuries, including a lacerated spleen and multiple broken bones for the F-150 driver. Hansen also broke her femur in the crash, court documents said.

A witness at the crash scene said Hansen said, “I was running from the police,” after exiting the vehicle following the crash. The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 11.

Both Hansen and the F-150 driver were hospitalized due to their injuries.

Independence Police said Hansen has never possessed a valid Missouri driver’s license. Court documents said her bond will be set at $25,000.
